Global Sustainable Energy Islands Initiative (GSEII)
GSEII, of which ESG is a consortium member, is working with the Alliance of Small Island States (AOSIS) in the Caribbean/Pacific to become Sustainable Energy Island Nations in the next 2–5 years.AOSIS nations are recognized as a special case for both environment and development as they are ecologically fragile and vulnerable and rely on imported petroleum for over 90% of commercial energy. These islands are well suited to become global showcases for renewable energy given their small size and isolated locations, the dominance of the tourism sector for economic development, their locally available resources, and their positive and progressive political attitudes.
Activities conducted by GSEII/ESG include:
Development of sustainable energy plans (SEPS) in 5 countries
Conduct of stakeholder meetings to finalize the SEPS
Working with AOSIS governments on policy formulation/implementation
Identification of renewable energy projects
Technical, economic, and financial analysis of renewable energy projects
Facilitation of financing for project investment
Public awareness and outreach campaigns
Technical assistance on project implementation.
GSEII/ESG have identified over 125 MW of renewable energy and energy efficiency potential in the nations of Dominica, Grenada, St. Lucia, and St. Kitts/Nevis; have supported resource and market assessments; and are working with the countries on project implementation to include a regional multi-megawatt geothermal project, a 13 MW wind energy project in St. Lucia, a 900 kW wind project in Grenada, and a solar water heater initiative in St. Lucia/Grenada.Sponsors include USDOE, USAID, Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Project (REEEP), Rockefeller Brothers Fund, and the UN Foundation.
