Mobilizing Sustainable Agriculture, Infrastructure and Capital (MOSAICO)

With the MOSAICO project team, ESG worked in the three largest and most diverse developing countries in the world—Brazil, China, and India—to develop local funds for clean energy projects, and to establish a global network to share lessons learned and best practices.

The MOSAICO team identified a local NGO in each of the countries to serve as an on-site partner in oversee coordination and implementation of the projects in-country.  This approach offers the real potential to create global impacts on rural poverty, climate change, and biodiversity.  MOSAICO’s local partners train local groups to work with local residents to draw on local sources of capital.  MOSAICO uses donor funding to leverage existing funding.  If sustainable approaches are to be widely adopted they must become business-as-usual for the local financial system.

Examples of MOSAICO’s projects include:

  • Supporting the development of Venture Capital Finance for sustainable investments in agriculture and infrastructure in China. MOSAICO worked with local partners in China and Tsinghua Venture Capital (THVC) to create China Environment Fund 2004, with a focus on renewable energy, energy efficiency, and the organic agriculture.
  • Strengthening rural cooperatives through working with APAEB, a local NGO in Bahia, Brazil, to educate farmers on the financibility of technologies such as solar-powered drip irrigation, and work with groups to form cooperatives.
  • Bundling small-scale organic agriculture and renewable energy transactions in the Himalayas. One project has focused on micro-hydro projects to serve the processing requirements of organic tea gardens in India.
